Corporation-city: the hidden truth
The corporations does not consider the impact that their activities have on the nature, nor take into account the living conditions of its workers: their money can buy everything.
Norilsk is a town in Siberia, built by prisoners of a Stalinist gulag. It is one of the most polluted cities in the world and is located next door to one of the largest deposits of nickel and copper in the world.
The city corporation is owned by Norilsk Nickel that since 2001, in accordance with the Russian government, has forbidden to foreigners every kind of journalistic activity. If you want to visit Norilsk you must have a special permission.
The landscape is bleak, it seems to look the city of machinery presented in the film Matrix.
The population is about 200,000 inhabitants, of whom 60,000 are workers at the Norilsk corporation (which represents the equivalent of 2.8% of Russian industry), whose turnover accounts for 1.9% of gross domestic product of Russia.
Pollution is so critical that the average life of the population does not exceed 50 years and mental illness are constantly increasing.
But why the Norilsk people don’t go away? Because the salary of the workers is much higher than the average Russian, and their aim is to collect money enough to live serenely the last years of their lives somewhere in Russia.
The Norilsk buys the life of its workers to make the maximum profit from their work, without regard for their health and nature.
But Norilsk is not alone in the ranks of the ten most polluted cities in the world, drawn from the Blacksmith Institute:
- Sumgayit, Azerbaijan
- Linfen, China
- Tianying, China
- Sukinda, India
- Vapi, India
- La Oroya, Peru
- Dzerzhinsk, Russia
- Norilsk, Russia
- Chernobyl, Ukraine
- Kabwe, Zambia
As you can see, 4 of these cities are of the former USSR. The coins that you could have in your pocket right now, may contain nickel extracted from workers of Norilsk: Once again the good of a few people is built on many other badly.
Note. From Wikipedia:
“The Blacksmith Institute, founded in 1999, is a New York City based organization supporting pollution-related environmental projects. One such project is the Polluted Places Initiative, which identifies polluted sites throughout the world by means of an online nomination process.“
